Driver's License

After your teen has learned to drive, he is ready to get a driver's license. In order to get his license, there are different things your teen needs to do.

To get his driver's license, your teen must do these things:

  • Pass the Test of Written Knowledge
  • Pass an eye exam
  • Get his driver's permit
  • Practice driving
  • Take the driving text

Bring these things to the DMV when you take the driving test:

  • Permit
  • social security number
  • high school card
  • Passport or birth certificate

Remember these things:

  • Always check with your local DMV. Make an appointment for your child to come in to take the test.
  • The written test has questions about signs and signals, traffic rules and drunk-driving laws.
  • Your child can prepare for the test by studying the driver's manual
  • Your child NEEDS to let the DMV know that he has a hearing loss.
  • MAKE SURE he gets a special small sticker on his driver's license to show he has a hearing loss:
    • This is important because if your child ever gets in an accident or is pulled over, the police will see on his driver's license that he has a hearing loss.
    • The police will then know to communicate by writing back and forth or to find an interpreter.
