Driver's Permit

Before your child can learn how to drive, he needs to get a driver's permit. This will let him practice driving with an adult in the car.

In some States, your child must take driver education before he can get his driver's permit. In other States this is not true. Check with your State's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to find out what he will need to do.

How can my child get ready to get his driver's permit?

  • Get a driver's manual. A driver's manual is a special book explaining how to drive safely.
  • Every State's Department of Motor Vehicles(DMV) has a driver's manual. You can get the manual at a DMV location in your state or at your child's high school.
  • Your teen must study the manual. It will help him get his permit, learn the rules of the road, and then get his license.

What do I need to know about getting a driver's permit?

  • To get a permit, your child must pass a Test of Knowledge. To take the test, he can:
    • Take the test on the computer.
    • Request a sign language interpreter and have the test signed to him.
  • After he passes the Test of Knowledge he will get a driver's permit.
  • The driver's permit is good for one year. Your child can drive with an adult sitting in the front seat of the car with him. The person with him must be a licensed driver and over the age of 21.
