Testing your child's hearing

How often your child's hearing is tested will depend on his needs.
He should get his hearing tested by an audiologist regularly. He should also be tested when something happens that can change his hearing loss.

Get Regular Hearing Tests
Your child should get his hearing tested regularly. Here are some suggestions from The Educational Audiology Association:

  • From birth to 3 years old: Children should be tested every 3 to 6 months.
  • From 3 to 6 years old: Children should be tested every 6 months.
  • After 6 years old: Children should be tested every year.

Get Hearing tests after something happens
This will depend on your child's exact needs and what happens to him. You should take him to the audiologist when:

  • He has had an ear infection. Ear infections can damage your child's ear and increase his hearing loss.
  • He is not hearing or speaking well. Your child's hearing aids may not be working well.
  • His speaking stops improving. His hearing loss may have increased.
  • He has progressive hearing loss. He should be tested every 2 months or as often as the audiologist thinks is a good idea.
