Apply to Vocational School
Once your child has decided on a job and a school she likes, it's time to apply. Read this page
for some tips on how to apply to vocational school.
Get the application.
Applying to a vocational or technical school may take some time. Most vocational schools have an
application packet. Your child can get the application these ways:
- Call the vocational school and ask to have an application sent to your home.
- Go to the vocational school to get one.
- Download the application online.
Fill out the application.
Make a copy of the application to practice on before filling out the real one.
- Most applications ask that your child write in black ink or type. Be sure your child writes
neatly and spells correctly.
- Your child will have to answer some questions, fill out forms, and sometimes write an essay.
- In some cases, you may have to provide the vocational school with different forms. You can start now
by finding and putting those documents together.:
- proof of birth - like your child's birth certificate
- proof of citizenship - like your child's social security card or visa
- proof of residence - like a bill with your name and address on it
- proof of insurance - like a copy of your health insurance policy that shows your child is covered
- proof of income - like you and your spouse's income tax statement
- Your child may be asked to take a placement test when applying to a vocational or technical school.
Placement tests are basic skills tests in subjects like math, English, and language. The application
packet will tell you how to find out about testing and when test dates are.
Read this parent's advice:
Applying for admission turned out to be a rewarding experience, in part because of the many
positive things I had to say about my daughter. Concerning references, I chose very carefully those
teachers and others from her past who knew my child, cared about her, and had seen what a hard worker she was.
