Get Ready for Vocational School

There are some ways you can help your child prepare for vocational school. Read more to find out about getting ready for vocational school. Find out if your child is ready to graduate from high school.

  • Talk with your child's teachers and counselors at the school.
  • Ask if your child is ready to graduate with a diploma or GED.
  • Ask your child's teachers about his grades.
  • Ask your child's counselor if your child is cleared for graduation.
  • Ask if your child owes any fines.

Make sure your child has the skills he needs to graduate.

  • Your child must be able to think and act on his own.
  • Your child must be able to read and write in English.
  • Your child must be able to do research and use a computer.

There may be a vocational school where you live. Your child can go to work and take classes close by. But if not, your child may have to move away from home.

Talk with your child about changes.

  • Ask your child if he feels ready to do things on his own.
  • Talk with your child about what it will be like to live on his own.
  • Talk about how your child can get help, and who can help him.
  • Talk about how your child will communicate with other people.
  • Talk about the kinds of things your child uses everyday, like TTY and closed captioning, that your child will need to bring with him to his new home.
  • Talk with your child about how he feels about working and studying at the same time.
  • Talk with your child about how he will solve problems that come up.

Do some research.

  • Do research about the job your child wants to have.
  • Get information about different vocational schools.
  • Get information about the city where your child will live.
  • Find out who can help your child.

Talk with people who have different jobs.

  • Visit job sites
  • Do job shadows and job try-outs
  • Ask about summer jobs
  • Ask about internships

Talk with the staff at the vocational school.
Here are some questions you can ask the people who work at the vocational school:

  • How much will vocational school cost?
  • Where will your child work?
  • Will your child get paid for work?
  • Where will your child live?
  • How much will housing cost?
  • Will your child need a roommate?
  • How will your child get to school and work?
  • Will your child need his own transportation?
